ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the benefits and disadvantages of using laptops by students in lectures and identifying effective laptop use strategies in the classroom. This research is an exploratory study, using an instrument containing 26 questions to collect data from 68 respondents. The results showed 73.5 percent of laptop users in the classroom, the majority (63%) felt the benefit of finding relevant articles and making lecture notes. Many laptop use activities are not relevant to learning such as browsing news, chatting and sending or answering emails (16 ???? 22 percent). Thirty percent of users only give a portion of attention between 25 to 50 percent in ongoing lectures. Users and non-laptop users in the classroom have different views about the benefits or disadvantages of using a laptop in class. Some students perceive that the use of laptops in the classroom interferes with concentration, indications of “disrespect” ???? against lecturers or other friends. Lecturers need to design the use of laptops in integrated classroom learning activities to enrich learning material and make the learning process attractive and effective.
