ABSTRACT

In order to help develop the utilization of the Indonesian sweet saga (Abrus precatorius Linne) medicinal plant into a commercial business scale on a home industry scale, research on the properties of the Klein process method for the manufacture of ammonium glycirizine salt contained in sweet saga leaves and in Chinese cinnamon root (Giycyrrhiza glabra Linne) as a comparison. The results of the study concluded that the modification process using percolation with ethanol (1: 1) extraction technique provided higher usability than those provided by the modification process using traditional way extraction techniques with hot water. Optimal results are given by Klein’s process method for making ammonium glycispy using hot water extraction techniques (by shaking the traditional method) from both types of sweet saga leaf and Chinese cinnamon roots, both of which are achieved after 10 hours of extraction. While the optimal results are given by using extraction techniques with ethanol (1: 1) how to percolate, for both kinds of material achieved after 12 hours of extraction (for sweet saga leaves) and 11 hours (for Chinese cinnamon roots). The results also showed that the quantity of glycirizine contained in Chinese cinnamon roots was one and a half times higher than that contained in sweet saga leaves.
