ABSTRACT

Background: Dyslipidemia is a lipid metabolic disorder in the form of an increase in total cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and a decrease in High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Quercetin contained in bay leaf flavonoids can reduce LDL cholesterol levels. Method: This type of research was laboratory experimental with randomized control group design pre-post test. Subjects were 24 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 8 weeks divided into 4 groups, consisting of 6 rats. The four groups were given a standard diet and a high-fat diet. The first group was a positive control group and the second group was given 0.18 g / kg BB simvastatin. The third group was given 0.034 g / kg BB of salam leaf extract and the fourth group was given 0.72 g / kg BB decoction of bay leaves. LDL cholesterol levels were determined by the CHOD-PAP method. The normality of data distribution was tested with Shapiro-Wilks. Data were analyzed by paired t-test, Kruskall Wallis, and One Way Anova. Results: The results showed an increase in LDL cholesterol levels of 79.7 mg / dL in the positive control group; 38.3 mg / dL in the decoction group; 26.2 mg / dL in the extract group; and 2.9 mg / dL in the simvastatin group. The positive control group experienced the highest increase in LDL cholesterol levels compared to other groups. The increase in LDL cholesterol levels in the extract group (26.2 mg / dL) was lower than in the decoction group (38.3 mg / dL). Post Hoc test results showed that there were differences in changes in LDL cholesterol levels between the simvastatin group and positive controls; simvastatin and extract; simvastatin and stew; extract and positive control; extract and decoction; as well as decoction and positive control. Conclusion: The administration of bay leaf decoction was not able to reduce LDL cholesterol levels in Sprague Dawley rats which were fed high fat but the increase in LDL cholesterol levels in the decoction group was lower than the positive control group and the increase was higher compared to the extract and simvastatin groups.
