ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study are (1) to review the researches on renewable silica-based materials derived from rice farm waste, rice husks, as an effort to build a deep understanding of sustainable development in producing advanced materials at low cost and environmentally friendly; and (2) mapping of silicon-rich tropical biomass through analysis of black ash from some parts of tropical plants as an effort to explore the potential of tropical biomass as a candidate for producing renewable silica powder and its derivative material. To achieve the first goal, Wilson and Kelly meta-analysis methods were adopted to examine the world’s research journals in the last decade on silica from rice husk and derived materials. For the mapping of silicon-rich tropical biomass, analysis with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy has been performed on fifteen black ashes of tropical plants. The meta-analysis results show that inorganic silica-based inorganic materials are a theme that attracts researchers to support green chemical movement for green industry. The mapping results show that in addition to rice husk, there are some tropical plants to be good candidates as tropical biomass with high silicon content.
